Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between temporomandibular disorder and sleeping hours (quantity of sleep).
Materials and Methods: This study analyzed 522 patients from ages of 11 to 19 years who suffered from temporomandibular disorders and visited the oral medicine clinic of Chosun University Dental Hospital. Data on patients¡¯ sleeping hours, age, gender, chief complaints, visual analog scale, parafunctional habits, results of diagnosis (arthralgia, myalgia), headache, neck and shoulder pain, and treatment periods were collected and statistically analyzed.
Results: The results show that gender and age significantly influenced prevalence rate and sleeping hours. That is, females showed higher prevalence rate than males. As age increased, prevalence rate also increased while sleeping hours decreased. Factors such as chief complaints, visual analog scale, parafunctional habits, results of diagnosis (arthralgia, myalgia), headaches, neck and shoulder pain, and treatment period did not show any significantly meaningful relation with sleeping hours.
Conclusion: As age increased in teenagers, the prevalence rate of temporomandibular disorders increased and sleeping hours decreased.
